Welcome to Syuwenct Elementary
Syuwenct (Pronounced: SEE-YOU-WHEN-ST) Elementary School, home of the “SPIRITS” is a centrally located elementary school in beautiful Nanaimo B.C. Formerly named Coal Tyee Elementary, the school opened in 1996 and is one of the youngest schools in our district.
In recognition of our strong relationship with Snuneymuxw First Nation, we looked to them to rename this school in honour of the land, Snuneymuxw teachings and to foster healing for all. The new name, Syuwenct, means our tradition, our history in hul’q’umi’num, and was passed by the Board on July 6, 2022.
Our school currently enrolls 350 students from Kindergarten to Grade 7. Being socially responsible citizens is important to us and our community. Our school community strives to be a safe, caring and orderly place for all its members.
School Goals
Continuing with our focus on the Science of Reading, we will expand our use of school-wide programs including Heggerty (primary), the 6-minute solution (grades 1-7), and systematic explicit phonics instruction to target students who are not yet meeting expectations in reading, listening, and viewing as identified through the PARS, Dibels, and report card data.
